ATANASIO, VARUCHAS. - Cretan hieromonk, d. 1708, author and translator of many ascetic books.
Worth noting are: 1) the translation into modern Greek of the Scala of s. Giovanni Climaco under the title Βιβλίον ὀνομαζόμενον «Νέος Κλίμακας» ἐξηγήνενον ἀπὸ τὸν Ἑλληνικὸν Κλίμακα (Venice 1690, 2nd ed. 1693); 2) a manual of prayers containing several offices and devotions for each day of the week, under the double title Σύνοψις ἱερὰ ἐβδομαδεύχθριον, corresponding to the two parts of the work (2nd ed., Venice 1720, and various subsequent editions); 3) a collection of discourses on the Passion and Resurrection of the Saviour: Λόγοι ὀνυρωμελεῖς εἰς τὸ σωτήριον πάθος καὶ εἰς τὴν ἔνδοξον ἀνάστασιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, I: Χριστοῦ (4th ed., Venice 1747). A Turkish version of this work was published in Venice (1753) by the hieromonk Serafino of Adalia under the title: Pitala Kelami (“The discourse of proof”).
