ATHANASIUS, VARUCHAS. - Cretan hieromonk, d. 1708, author and translator of many ascetic books.

Worth noting: 1) the translation into Modern Greek of the Ladder of St. John Climacus under the title Βιβλίον ὀνομαζόμενον «Νέος Κλίμακας» ἐξηγήνενον ἀπὸ τὸν Ἑλληνικὸν Κλίμακα (Venice 1690, 2nd ed. 1693); 2) a prayer manual containing certain offices and devotions for each day of the week, with the double title Σύνοψις ἱερὰ ἐβδομαδεύχθριον, corresponding to the two parts of the work (2nd ed., Venice 1720, and various later editions); 3) a collection of discourses on the passion and resurrection of the Savior: Λόγοι ὀνυρωμελεῖς εἰς τὸ σωτήριον πάθος καὶ εἰς τὴν ἔνδοξον ἀνάστασιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, I: Χριστοῦ (4th ed., Venice 1747). A Turkish version of this work was published in Venice (1753) by the hieromonk Seraphim of Adalia under the title: Pitala Kelami ("The Discourse of the Trial").
