AUDACITY. — Known only from the Augustinian epistolary (PL 33, 1075-77; ed. Goldbacher in CSEL, 57, pp. 616-618). He had asked St. Augustine for a lengthy writing, summarizing his letter in six hexameters; the Saint replies, excusing himself, declining the compliments and amiably pointing out the defects of the few verses, the last of which counted seven feet.
