AUSPICIO, bishop of Toul. — He is mentioned twice by Apollinaris Sidonius (Ep., IV, 17; VII, 10). We possess from him a poetic letter, written around 475-80, to Arbogast, count of Trier, in which he praises the recipient and urges him to shun avarice. This letter is one of the earliest examples of rhythmic poetry, since its 164 iambic dimeters are arranged not according to quantity but according to accent.
