AUSPICIO, bishop of TOUL. — He is mentioned twice by Apollinaris Sidonius (Ep., IV, 17; VII, 10). We have from him a poetic letter, written around 475–80, to Arbogastes, count of Trier, in which he praises the recipient and recommends that he flee avarice. This letter is one of the oldest examples of rhythmic poetry, since its 164 iambic dimeters are measured not according to quantity but according to accent.
