AUDI BENIGNE CONDITOR. - Hymn of Vespers for the season of Lent, in which the verse unfolds in a tone of humble prayer, asking that the Lord, taking into account our fasts and penances, may grant us forgiveness of our sins. Trust in divine mercy is beautifully joined to the humility of the supplicant. The Lord well knows our weaknesses and knows all the frailty of human misery; He will therefore know how to understand and have compassion on us. Moreover, all the prayers of Lent and the spirit that animates them are wonderfully synthesized in this hymn, preserved in manuscripts of the 10th century.
