AZEVÊDO, LUIZ GONZAGA de. – Portuguese Jesuit, born at Arcos de Val de Vez (Minho) in 1867, died at La Guardia on 9 March 1930. He entered the Society in 1898, taught literature and history and, from 1910, devoted himself chiefly to historical studies. He left two printed works: Proscritos (2 vols., Valladolid 1911 and Brussels 1914, translated into Spanish and French: it is the history of the expulsion of the Jesuits during the revolution of 1910) and Jesuita. Fases de una legenda (2 vols., Brussels 1913). His Historia de Portugal, from its origins to the thirteenth century, was published recently under the editorship of Fr. D. Mauricio Gomes dos Santos (6 vols., Lisbon 1935–43).
