AZEVÊDO, MANUEL de. – Portuguese Jesuit, b. at Coimbra on 25 Dec. 1713, d. at Piacenza on 2 Apr. 1796. He spent many years in Rome and was highly esteemed by Benedict XIV, for whom he collected and published all his works in 12 volumes, translating several of them into Latin (*S.D.N. Benedicti XIV opera*, Rome 1747–51).
He also composed a compendium of the two principal ones. Among his own works, whether liturgical, literary, or ascetical, the chief are the *Exercitationes liturgicae in singulos dies distributae* (Rome 1750), written for the liturgical school he directed at the Roman College; the *De catholicae Ecclesiae pietate erga animas in Purgatorio degentes* (Rome 1748); and a *Life of the Portuguese thaumaturge St. Anthony of Padua* (Venice 1788).
