AZEVÊDO, MANUEL de. — Portuguese Jesuit, born in Coimbra on 25 December 1713, died in Piacenza on 2 April 1796. He lived for many years in Rome and was highly esteemed by Benedict XIV, whose complete works he collected and published in 12 volumes, translating several of them into Latin (S.D.N. Benedicti XIV opera, Rome 1747–51).
He also composed a compendium of the two principal works. Among his own liturgical, literary, and ascetical works, the principal ones are the Exercitationes liturgicae in singulos dies distribuitae (Rome 1750), written for the school of liturgy that he directed at the Collegio Romano; the De catholicae Ecclesiae pietate erga animas in Purgatorio degentes (Rome 1748); and a Vita del taumaturgo portoghese s. Antonio di Padova (Venice 1788).
