AZEVÊDO, MANUEL DE

AZEVEDO, Manuel de. - Portuguese Jesuit, b. in Coimbra on 25 Dec. 1713, d. in Piacenza on 2 Apr. 1796. He lived for many years in Rome and was greatly esteemed by Benedict XIV, whose complete works he collected and published in 12 volumes, translating several of them into Latin (S.D.N. Benedicti XIV opera, Rome 1747-51).

He also composed a compendium of the two principal ones. Among his own works — liturgical, literary, ascetic — the principal ones are the Exercitationes liturgicae in singulos dies distributae (Rome 1750), written for the school of liturgy that he directed at the Collegio Romano, the De catholicae Ecclesiae pietate erga animas in Purgatorio degentes (Rome 1748), and a Vita del taumaturgo portoghese s. Antonio di Padova (Venice 1788).
