ANDRÁSSY, ANTAL. - Jesuit, bishop of Rosenau, b. at Romanfalva (Hungary) in 1742, d. at Rosenau on 12 Nov. 1799. After entering the Society of Jesus, he was secularized in 1773 when the Order was suppressed, and became first parish priest (1776) at Rosenau and then bishop (1780–99). Most zealous—he founded 20 new parishes—and combative, he energetically opposed the prevailing Josephinism and any deviations in culture and ecclesiastical discipline. When he refused to unite in marriage a Catholic with a Protestant woman separated from her husband, he was stripped of his goods and forced to retire to a Capuchin convent, where he lived in great poverty while continuing to govern his diocese until his death.
