André, Juan

ANDRÉ, JUAN. - A Muslim converted to Christianity in 1487. Ordained a priest, he devoted himself to preaching the Gospel to the Moors of Spain. He taught commercial law, perhaps at Saragossa. He wrote a Confusion de la secta Mahometana (Valencia 1517; Italian translation by D. Gaztelu, Venice 1540) and a treatise on the application of arithmetic to commerce (Valencia 1515). A translation of the Qur'an into the Aragonese dialect and a treatise on rhetoric are also attributed to him.
