ALIDOSI, FRANCESCO. - Cardinal, b. at Castel del Rio (Imola) between 1450 and 1460, d. at Ravenna in 1511. Secretary and counsellor of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, he was created cardinal by him in 1505, when the latter ascended to the pontificate. Legate at Bologna in 1508, he sought by every means to root out the party of the Bentivoglio, earning himself most tenacious hatreds that are reflected in the judgments passed on him by many of his contemporaries. Denounced to the Pope, but reconfirmed despite the accusations, he came into conflict with Francesco Maria della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, captain general of the pontifical militias in the Pope's war against Ferrara, and was arrested by him in 1510 as a suspected relations with the enemy. Saved once again by the benevolence of Julius II, he fled from Bologna upon the entry of the French troops (1511), and took refuge in Ravenna near the Pope. There, having met the duke of Urbino, who held him responsible for treason and was perhaps jealous of his constant favor, he was killed by him on the public street. A much-discussed figure, judged in various ways, about whom a definitive word has not yet been said.
