ALIDOSI, FRANCESCO. — Cardinal, born at Castel del Rio (Imola) between 1450 and 1460, died at Ravenna in 1511. Secretary and counsellor to Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, he was created cardinal by him when he ascended the pontifical throne in 1505. Legate at Bologna in 1508, he sought by every means to uproot the party of the Bernetti, a struggle which earned him the bitterest enmities, reflected in the judgments passed on him by many of his contemporaries. Denounced to the Pope, yet reconfirmed despite the accusations, he came into conflict with Francesco Maria della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, captain-general of the papal forces in the Pope’s war against Ferrara, and was arrested by him in 1510 on suspicion of secret
