AYROLES, JEAN-BAPTISTE. — French Jesuit, born at Py (Pyrénées-Orientales) in 1828, died at Bordeaux in 1921. Having entered the novitiate of the Society in 1850, he was first a professor, preacher, and missionary; then, from 1885 until his death, he devoted himself to the history of Joan of Arc and to the cause for her beatification. His principal work, La vraie Jeanne d'Arc (5 vols., Paris 1890–1902), contributed greatly to the heroine’s beatification and canonization.
