AYROLES, JEAN-BAPTISTE

**AYROLES, JEAN-BAPTISTE** – French Jesuit, b. at Py (Pyrénées-Orientales) in 1828, d. at Bordeaux in 1921. Having entered the novitiate of the Society in 1850, he was first a professor, preacher, and missionary, and then, from 1885 until his death, devoted himself to the history of Joan of Arc and to the cause of her beatification. His principal work, *La vraie Jeanne d'Arc* (5 vols., Paris 1890–1902), contributed greatly to the beatification and canonization of the heroine.
