BAGUTTI, GIUSEPPE. - Abbot and educator, born at Rodio (Canton Ticino) in 1776, died at Milan in 1837. A collaborator of Federico Confalonieri in the establishment of schools of mutual instruction, from 1816 he devoted his entire life to the education of the deaf-mute, assuming the directorship of the Institute for them in Milan. In his travels abroad first, and then for a year at Assarotti’s school in Genoa, he had acquired the elements of that preparation necessary to fulfil such a mission worthily.
He was responsible for the Institute’s regulations, which derived security of existence from the stability of the introductory methods; he was the author of the first methodological book on the education of the deaf-mute, entitled Su lo stato fisico, intellettuale e morale, su l'istruzione e i diritti legali dei sordo-muti (Milan 1828); the initiative for the establishment in Milan of the G. Cardano school of method was likewise his.
