Giuseppe Bagutti. — Abbot and educator, b. at Rodio (Canton Ticino) in 1776, d. at Milan in 1837. Collaborator of Federico Confalonieri in the establishment of mutual instruction schools, from 1816 he devoted his entire life to the education of the deaf-mute, assuming the direction of the Institute for them in Milan. In his travels abroad first, and then for a year at the Assarotti school in Genoa, he had acquired the elements of that preparation which was necessary to carry out such a mission worthily.
To him is owed the regulation of the Institute, which derived stability of life from the stability of the methods introduced; his is the first book on method in the education of the deaf-mute, entitled *Su lo stato fisico, intellettuale e morale, su l'istruzione e i diritti legali dei sordi-muti* (Milan 1828); it was also his initiative to establish in Milan the G. Cardano method school.
