ARGIOLAS, ANTONIO. – Priest and educator: b. at Pirri (Cagliari) on 14 Oct. 1834, d. at Cagliari on 27 June 1914. Having taken a doctorate in theology, he devoted his entire existence, through study and work, to the education of the deaf-mute. After attending the School of Method for the instruction of the deaf-mute in Milan and obtaining his diploma there in 1871, he devoted himself from 1882 until his death to the service of these unfortunate persons, according to a system of his own devising, called the “maternal-grammatical” method. The writings he left behind bear witness to how he applied all his intellect and all his heart to this apostolate of good, and reveal personal and original insights in the direction of instruction. We may mention: La conversazione, la grammatica e la composizione nelle scuole dei sordomuti (Cagliari 1906); La grammatica dei miei sordomuti (ibid. 1910); Dialoghetti familiari per le scuole dei sordomuti (ibid. 1910), etc.
