ARGIOLAS, ANTONIO. - Priest, educator: b. at Pirri (Cagliari) on 14 Oct. 1834, d. at Cagliari on 27 June 1914. Having obtained a doctorate in theology, he devoted his entire life, through study and work, to the education of the deaf and mute. After attending the School of method for the teaching of the deaf and mute in Milan and having obtained his diploma there in 1871, he labored from 1882 until his death on behalf of these unfortunates, according to a system of his own, called "maternal grammatical." The writings he left behind attest to how he placed all his intellect and all his heart into this apostolate of good, and they reveal personal and original touches of approach in teaching. We recall: La conversazione, la grammatica e la composizione nelle scuole dei sordomuti (Cagliari 1906); La grammatica dei miei sordomuti (ibid. 1910); Dialoghetti familiari per le scuole dei sordomuti (ibid. 1910), etc.
