ARGENTRÉ, CHARLES DU PLESSIS D'. - French theologian, b. at the castle of Plessis, near Vitré, on 16 May 1673, d. at Tulle on 27 Oct. 1740. He studied at the Sorbonne and obtained his doctorate in 1700. In 1699 he was ordained a priest. He later became dean of Laval, vicar general of Tréguier (1707), royal chaplain (1709) and bishop of Tulle (1723).

Of his numerous theological and philosophical works, the following deserve mention: Analyse de la foi divine (Lyons 1698); Elementa theologica, in which he denies the infallibility of the Pope (Paris 1702); Explication des Sacraments de l'Eglise (Tulle 1734); and the most important of all, Collectio judiciousum de notis erroribus qui ab initio saeculi XII... in Ecclesia proscripti sunt et notati (Paris 1724-36). He edited the edition of the Works of the theologian Martin Grandin (5 vols., Paris 1710-1712), to which he added some of his own important dissertations of a theological character.
