BARSOV, NICOLA; IVANOVIĆ. – A celebrated dissident Russian theologian, b. in 1838, d. in 1903. He was a master of theology and for 25 years a professor at the Ecclesiastical Academy of Petersburg. A member of various learned societies, he published several volumes of the Description of the Acts of the Archive of the Holy Synod and many articles and essays on religious and literary questions, especially on ecclesiastical history. Among his principal works is the History of Ancient Preaching (Petersburg 1865). In the doctrine of the Church he was a follower of the theories taught by Alessio Khomiakov, as he demonstrated in his dissertation Nova methodus in theologia (1869–70).
