BUCHAREV, ALEKSANDR MATVEJEVIČ. - Russian writer, known as "the archimandrite Theodore", b. in 1822 and d. in 1871. A dissident religious thinker animated by the ideal of re-Christianizing the world, he became a monk. Later he taught Theology at Kazan and published numerous articles on religious topics of current interest. Annoyed because the censorship had not allowed him to print a commentary on the Apocalypse on account of his "confused ideas", he asked to be reduced to the lay state, an unusual case in Russia. He accepted all ecclesiastical and civil penalties for the love of Christ humiliated. Afterwards, however, he married, to everyone's great scandal. In 1866 he defended himself in an apology. He died in extreme poverty.
