BAUMGARTEN, MICHAEL. - Protestant theologian, b. at Haseldorf (Holstein), on 25 March 1812 and d. at Rostock on 21 July 1889. He distinguished himself throughout his life in the unyielding affirmation of tolerance in religion, and against that Caesarism in the Church which — as in ancient Byzantium — had taken root in Lutheranism.

In support of these concerns of his he wrote, among other things, Liturgie und Predigt (1843) and Theologischer Kommentar zum Pentateuch (2 vols., 1843-44). Because of this inflexible affirmation of his and because of his militant program of action in favor of spirituality in the Church, in 1858 he had to leave his chair at Rostock. By a contradiction, between 1874 and 1881 he then found himself representing the Liberal Party, made up also of rationalistically inclined exponents, in the German Reich.
