BÄUMER, SUITBERT. - Benedictine monk of the abbey of Beuron and learned liturgist, b. at Leuchtenberg (Rhineland) on 28 March 1845, d. at Freiburg im Breisgau on 12 Aug. 1894, a priest in 1869. The "Kulturkampf" forced him to withdraw to the abbey of Maredsous, where he remained until 1890. He prepared several editions of liturgical books for the publisher Desclée and left various studies of great value on the author of the Micrologus (1889), on the missal of Stowe (1892), on the Sacramentarium Gelasianum (1893), etc. But his principal work is the monumental Geschichte des Breviers (Freiburg im Breisgau 1895), a work dense with erudition and learning.
