Beato, Saint

BEATO, SANTO

BEATO, Saint. - Apostle of Switzerland; nothing is known about him. The legend of the 16th century made him a disciple of the Apostles. Some consider him a saint who never existed, others, in view of the traces of a cult visible as early as the 12th century, regard him as a monk of Anglo-Saxon origin who went to Switzerland around the 6th century. There is no lack of those who make him the same person as St. B. of Vendôme of the 9th century. On the state of the question cf. H. Moretus, La légende de s.
