BEAULIEU, BERNARD-LOUIS. - Missionary in Korea, b. 8 Oct. 1840 at Langon (France), entered the foreign missions of Paris in 1863 and was ordained priest in 1864, set out for Korea with Bretennière (v.); after a brief stay in Manchuria, he entered Korea in 1865, studied the language and was put in charge of a small district not far from the capital, when the persecution of 1866 broke out. Arrested on the denunciation of his servant, he was imprisoned in Seoul, subjected to torture and condemned to decapitation, which took place on 8 March 1866. With him were martyred Bishop Msgr. Berneux, and his confreres Just de Bretennière and Dorie. As a young student he had drafted, for the volume La salle des martyrs (Paris 1865), the section entitled Notice sur les martyrs (pp. 63-432).
