BEAULIEU, BERNARD-LOUIS. - Missionary in Korea, b. 8 Oct. 1840 at Langon (France), he entered the Paris Foreign Missions in 1863 and was ordained priest in 1864; he left for Korea with Bretennière (v.); after a brief stay in Manchuria, he entered Korea in 1865, studied the language, and was placed in charge of a small district not far from the capital, when the persecution of 1866 broke out. Arrested on the denunciation of his servant, he was imprisoned in Seoul, subjected to torture, and sentenced to be beheaded, which took place on 8 March 1866. Martyred with him were Bishop Mgr. Berneux and his fellow brethren Giusto di Bretennière and Dorie. As a young student he had written, for the volume La salle des martyrs (Paris 1865), the section entitled Notice sur les martyrs (pp. 63-432).
