BEAULIEU, Bernard-Louis. – Missionary in Korea, b. 1 Oct 1840 at Langon (France), entered the Paris Foreign Missions in 1863 and was ordained priest in 1864. He departed for Korea with Brettenière (q.v.); after a brief stay in Manchuria, he entered Korea in 1865, studied the language and was entrusted with a small district not far from the capital, when the persecution of 1866 broke out. Arrested on the denunciation of his servant, he was imprisoned in Seoul, endured torture and was condemned to beheading, which took place on 8 March 1866. With him were martyred Bishop Msgr. Berneux and his confrères Juste de Brettenière and Dorie. As a young student he had written, for the volume La salle des martyrs (Paris 1865), the section entitled Notice sur les martyrs (pp. 63-432).
