ANATOLE DE BENGY. - Jesuit, b. 19 Sept. 1824 at Bourges, d. 26 May 1871 at Paris. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1843 and served as a military chaplain during the Crimean War. He later taught in various colleges and in 1870 again served as a chaplain in the Franco-Prussian War. He was especially generous in aiding the wounded during the Siege of Paris. On the night of 3 Apr. 1871 he was arrested by the National Guard and held as a hostage by the "Commune." A few weeks later he was killed, along with two other Fathers of the Society of Jesus and about forty other victims.
