BENGY, ANATOLE de. – Jesuit, born on 19 September 1824 in Bourges, died on 26 May 1871 in Paris. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1843 and took part in the Crimean War as a military chaplain. He subsequently taught in various colleges, and in 1870 again served as a chaplain in the Franco-Prussian War. Especially during the siege of Paris, he gave generous assistance to the wounded. On the night of 3 April 1871, he was arrested by the National Guard and held hostage by the «Commune». A few weeks later he was killed, together with two other fathers of the Society of Jesus and about forty other victims.
