BERNARDO, bishop of PARMA. — Elected in 1169 and confirmed the following year, he worked, as lord of the city and contado of Parma, to protect it from enemy incursions by fortifying its suburbs. He greatly enlarged the episcopal palace. He was the first bishop of Parma to assume the title of count. In 1179 he attended the Lateran Council. By virtue of art. 8 of the Peace of Constance, he had the right to elect the podestà of Parma confirmed. In recognition of his loyalty to the Empire, he was granted the castle of Castrignano. Together with the emperor, he subscribed to the conditions of peace imposed on the city of Crema, and he took part in the treaty between Parma and Piacenza. Died 18 November 1194.
