BERTINO, Saint. — Second abbot of Sithiu on the river Aa, where the rule and customs of St COLUMBAN were followed. He first appears in 674–75 as a signatory of the will of Bishop AMAND. In 682 he obtained from King THEODERIC III the right to collect taxes from dependent territories, previously assigned to the treasury. The noble Amalfrido in 685 donated to him the villa of Hunulfocurten. From King CHLODOVEUS III (691) and from CHILDEBERT III (697) he received confirmation of the immunities granted to his predecessor Mummolus. He died on 5 September 698. In a document of 745 he is referred to with the title of saint.
