BICCHIERI, GUALA. - Cardinal, b. at Vercelli around the middle of the 12th century, d. at Rome on 31 May 1227. He entered as a very young man among the canons of St. Eusebius, where he held a benefice in 1187. In 1205 he was created cardinal of the deaconry of St. Mary in Campitelli by Innocent III. He was pontifical legate in Tuscany, in France (1208) to Philip Augustus, in England (1216) to Henry III. Already in 1211 he was transferred to the presbyteral title of Sts. Sylvester and Martin. In 1218, on his return from England, he founded at Vercelli the church of St. Andrew with the adjoining abbey, which he entrusted to the canons of St. Victor of Paris and which later became the city's first "Studium generale," and the hospital, to which he donated all his possessions situated in the territories of S. Germano, Coresana and Vercelli. In 1225 he was legate to Frederick II. He was a man of learning and eloquence, a scholar and a jurist.
