BETHLEHEM OF GALILEE. - A city of the tribe of Zebulun. In Jos. 19:15, among the cities assigned to this tribe, a locality named B. is mentioned (LXX: A Βαυθάμ, B Βαυθάμ). In Judg. 12:8 B. is indicated as the birthplace of Abesan (v.): this B. is very probably to be referred to the B. of Zebulun, because the general tenor of the book of Judges concerns almost exclusively northern Palestine. Today B. is a village of about 200 souls, 12 km west of Nazareth and a little south of the Wadi el-Melek. There are to be seen remains of a synagogue and of a church with three naves.
