The Ephraimites quarrel with Jephte: forty-two thousand of them are slain: Abeson, Ahialon, and Abdon, are judges.

1But behold there arose a sedition in Ephraim. And passing towards the north, they said to Jephte: When thou wentest to fight against the children of Ammon, why wouldst thou not call us, that we might go with thee? Therefore we will burn thy house. Ora noi darem fuoco alla tua casa.BVT behold in Ephraim there arose a sedition. For they passing against the North, said to Iephte: Going to fight against the children of Ammon, why wouldst thou not cal vs, that we might goe with thee? Therfore we wil burne thy house. 2And he answered them: I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon: and I called you to assist me, and you would not do it.Rispose egli loro: Io, e il mio popolo eravamo a gran contesa co' figliuoli di Ammon: e io vi chiamai, affinchè mi recaste aiuto, e non voleste farlo. To whom he answered: I and my people were at great strife against the children of Ammon: and I called you, that you should ayde me, and you would not doe it.Quibus ille respondit: Disceptatio erat mihi et populo meo contra filios Ammon vehemens: vocavique vos, ut præberetis mihi auxilium, et facere noluistis. 3And when I saw this, I put my life in my own hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon and the Lord delivered them into my hands. What have I deserved, that you should rise up to fight against me?Lo che avendo veduto posi a repentaglio la mia vita, e andai contro i figliuoli di Ammon, e il Signore li diede nelle mie mani. Ho io meritato, che voi vi moviate a farmi guerra?Which I seeing put my life in myne owne handes, and passed to the children of Ammon, and our Lord deliuered them into my handes. What haue I deserued, that you rise against me in battel. Quid commerui, ut adversum me consurgatis in prælium ? 4Then calling to him all the men of Galaad, he fought against Ephraim: and the men of Galaad defeated Ephraim, because he had said: Galaad is a fugitive of Ephraim, and dwelleth in the midst of Ephraim and Manasses.E radunati presso di sé tutti quelli di Galaad, venne alle mani con que' di Ephraim: e i Galaaditi sconfissero gli Ephraimiti, i quali avean detto: Galaad è un fuggitivo di Ephraim, che sta in mezzo tra Ephraim e Manasse.Therfore al the men of Galaad being called to him, he fought against Ephraim: and the men of Galaad stroke Ephraim, because he had said: Galaad is a fugitiue of Ephraim, and dwelleth in the middes of Ephraim and Manasses.

5And the Galaadites secured the fords of the Jordan, by which Ephraim was to return. And when any one of the number of Ephraim came thither in the flight, and said: I beseech you let me pass: the Galaadites said to him: Art thou not an Ephraimite? If he said: I am not:E i Galaaditi posero guardie a' guadi del Giordano, pei quali dovean ripassare que' di Ephraim. E allorché vi giungeva alcuno de' molti fuggitivi, e diceva: Vi prego di lasciarmi passare: dicevano a lui i Galaaditi: Se' tu forse Ephratheo? E rispondendo egli: Nol sono:And the Galaadites tooke the fordes of Iordan, by the which Ephraim was to returne. And when there had come to the same one of the number of Ephraim, fleeing and had said: I besech you let me passe: The Galaadites said to him: Art thou not an Ephraite? Who saying: I am not:Occupaveruntque Galaaditæ vada Jordanis, per quæ Ephraim reversurus erat. Cumque venisset ad ea de Ephraim numero, fugiens, atque dixisset: Obsecro ut me transire permittatis: dicebant ei Galaaditæ: Numquid Ephrathæus es ? quo dicente: Non sum: 6They asked him: Say then, Scibboleth, which is interpreted, An ear of corn. But he answered, Sibboleth, not being able to express an ear of corn by the same letter. Then presently they took him and killed him in the very passage of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim, two and forty thousand. E perirono in quel tempo quaranta due mila uomini di Ephraim.they asked him: Say then Schibboleth, which is interpreted an Eare of corne. Who answered, Sibboleth, not being able by the same letter to expresse, an eare of corne. And immediatly being apprehended they killed him in the very passage of Iordan. And there fel at that time of Ephraim two and fourtie thousand.interrogabant eum: Dic ergo Scibboleth, quod interpretatur Spica. Statimque apprehensum jugulabant in ipso Jordanis transitu. Et ceciderunt in illo tempore de Ephraim quadraginta duo millia. 7And Jephte, the Galaadite, judged Israel six years: and he died, and was buried in his city of Galaad. Therfore Iephte the Galaadite iudged Israel six yeares: and he died, and was buried in his citie of Galaad. 8After him Abesan of Bethlehem judged Israel:Dopo di lui fu giudice d'Israele Abesan di Bethlehem:After him Abesan of Bethlehem iudged Israel:Post hunc judicavit Israël Abesan de Bethlehem:
