Biester, Johann Erich

BIESTER, JOHANN ERICH. - Philosopher, b. in Lübeck on 17 Nov. 1749, d. in Berlin on 20 Febr. 1816. He belonged to the circle of Mendelssohn and Nicolai, and was animated by the spirit of Wolffian philosophy. He founded the Secret Society for the Diffusion of Light and Truth, with the aim of transforming religion, of subjecting dogma to morality and of spreading rationalist and unbelieving Enlightenment thought.

With Jedike he gave life to the Berliner Monatsschrift, a monthly periodical that had the intention of popularizing fragments of Kant's political and religious philosophy.
