BIESTER, JOHANN ERICH. – Philosopher, born in Lübeck on 17 November 1749, died in Berlin on 20 February 1816. He belonged to the circle of Mendelssohn and Nicolai, and was animated by the spirit of Wolffian philosophy. He founded the Secret Society for the dissemination of light and truth, with the aim of transforming reli-

gion, subjecting dogma to morality, and disseminating rationalist and unbelieving Enlightenment thought.

Together with Jedike, he founded the Berliner Monatsschrift, a monthly periodical whose purpose was to popularize fragments of Kant’s political and religious philosophy.
