GIOSEPPE BONACCORSI. — Missionary of the Sacred Heart, born in Rome on 18 Dec. 1874, died there on 7 March 1935. He founded and directed for a semester the Rivista storico-critica delle scienze teologiche. Under the guidance of Fr. Giovanni Genocchi (q.v.) he devoted himself with zeal to biblical exegesis of the New Testament, becoming a distinguished scholar in the field.
Among his most notable works on this subject are: Il Natale. Appunti di esegesi e di storia (Rome 1903); Questioni bibliche (Bologna 1904); I tre primi Vangeli e la critica letteraria ossia la questione sinottica (Mozza 1904); Harnack e Loisy o le recenti polemiche intorno alla essenza del cristianesimo (Florence 1904); Letture scelte del Nuovo Testamento (ibid. 1906); Breve grammatica del Nuovo Testamento greco (ibid. 1910); Primi saggi di filologia neotestamentaria (I, Turin 1933; vols. II–IV, already prepared in manuscript, could not be printed owing to the author’s untimely death); Vangeli apocrifi (I, Florence 1948; the 1930 edition was lost).
