BORIS and GLIEB. — Two of the twelve sons of s. Vladimiro, prince of Russia, who at Baptism received the names Romano and David. After the death of Vladimiro (1015), they were massacred by their brother Sviatopolk, B. on 24 July 1015 and G. on 15 September. They were honored as martyrs, and after the 11th and 12th centuries they are found at the head of the list of the national saints of the Russian Church.
The Catholic Ruthenian Church introduced them into its calendar, since they lived before the schism.
