BORIS AND GLEB. - Two of the twelve sons of St. Vladimir, prince of Russia, who at Baptism received the names Roman and David. After the death of Vladimir (1015), they were massacred by their brother Sviatopolk, B. on 24 July 1015 and G. on 15 September. They came to be honored as martyrs, and after the 11th and 12th centuries they are found at the head of the list of national saints of the Russian Church.
The Ruthenian Catholic Church has introduced them into its calendar, since they lived before the schism.
