CABANILLAS, JUAN JOSÉ. – Spanish organist, born at Algemesi on 6 Sept. 1644, died on 29 Apr. 1712. Before 1668, while not yet a priest, he was exceptionally appointed organist of Valencia Cathedral. He took care of the infantes or choirboys.
His very numerous organ works display the characteristics of the Spanish school; he was far more attentive to aesthetic sentiment and mystical expression than to technique. In some of his works, however, he was a forerunner. Although many of his works have been lost, there remain highly interesting tientos, toccatas, passacalles, and gallardas.
