JUAN JOSÉ CABANILLAS. — Spanish organist, b. at Algemesí on 6 Sept. 1644, d. on 29 Apr. 1712. Before 1668, not yet a priest, he was exceptionally appointed organist of the cathedral of Valencia. He had charge of the infantes or boy choristers.
His very numerous organ works display the characteristics of the Spanish school; he was far more concerned with aesthetic sentiment and mystical expression than with technique. In some of his compositions, however, he is a precursor. Although many of his works have been lost, there remain extremely interesting tientos, toccatas, passacaglias and gallardas.
