CABANILLAS, JUAN JOSÉ. - Spanish organist, b. at Algemesi on 6 Sept. 1644, d. on 29 Apr. 1712. Before 1668, while not yet a priest, he was appointed by way of exception organist of the cathedral of Valencia. He had charge of the infantes or choirboys.

His very numerous organ works display the characteristics of the Spanish school; he was far more attentive to aesthetic feeling and mystical expression than to technique. In some of his works, however, he is a precursor. Although many of his works have been lost, there remain to us highly interesting tientos, toccatas, passacalles and gallardas.
