CABEZÓN, ANTONIO de. - Spanish musician, b. in 1510 at Castrillo de Matajudíos, and d. on 25 March 1566. In childhood he became blind, and after some time spent with the bishop of Palencia, at the age of 18 he was already in the service of Charles V and Philip II; he was later in Genoa, Milan, Mantua, Trent, etc., and perhaps also in England. In his works one notices a great inventiveness, and the art with which he played the organ was marvellous.
Of his works — intermezzi, psalm settings, tientos, glosses, variations, made for the instruction of his very numerous pupils — his son collected a part, presented to King Philip in 1578. He was admired as the greatest organist of his time. His works have been published recently by Filippo Pedrell in vols. III, IV, VII and VIII of the Hispaniae Musica Sacra (Barcelona 1895 ff.).
