CADONICI, GIOVANNI. - Italian theologian, b. in Venice in 1705, d. 27 February 1786, canon of Cremona. Tenaciously opposed to the papal court, he favored Josephinism. To support his theses he did not scruple to do violence to the thought of the Fathers. He drew attention as an anti-Molinist. But his greater notoriety is due to the strange opinion he maintained against the common sentiment and the tradition of the Church, namely that, even before the Redemption, the saints in limbo enjoyed the beatific vision.
His thought is set forth in his works: Vindiciae augustinianae ab imputatione regni millenarii (Cremona 1747); Dialoghi tre in difesa delle vindicie agostiniane (Rovereto 1753); S. Augustini de piorum statu in sinu Abrahae ante Christi mortem sententia (Venice 1763); De dicto Augustini: «Ecclesiam Christi servituram sub regibus huius saeculi» (Pavia 1784).
