CALGARY, DIOCESI DI

CALGARY, Diocese of. - City in the province of Alberta in Canada and suffragan diocese of Edmonton (formerly St. Albert), comprising the southern part of Alberta. It is bounded on the east by the province of Saskatchewan, on the south by the United States, and on the west by British Columbia.

It counts 47,189 Catholics out of 277,000 inhabitants in an area of 66,230 sq km. It has 109 churches, 50 parishes, 63 diocesan priests and 30 regulars (1948). The diocese was erected on 30 Nov. 1912 by dismemberment of that of St. Albert (today Edmonton), of which it formed the southern part.
