CAMPORESE, PIETRO, il GIOVANE. - Architect, b. in Rome on 22 May 1792 and d. there in 1873. He belonged to a notable family of Roman architects active between the mid-18th and the late 19th century. He was in fact the son of Giulio C. (1754-84), who in turn was the brother of Giuseppe C. (1763-1822). Pietro C. il vecchio (1726-81) was his grandfather. Numerous ecclesiastical buildings in Rome and Lazio are to be attributed to the activity of the C. family. Pietro C. il G. began his career as assistant to P. Belli and P. Bosio in the reconstruction of S. Paolo fuori le mura (1823-29); the restoration of SS. Vito e Modesto dates from 1832.
His best works are the so-called portico di Vejo in piazza Colonna, built as the headquarters of the Pontifical post office, elegant and characteristic, and the façade of the Ospedale di S. Giacomo (1831-46), simple, correct, and majestic. Also his are the two horseshoe-shaped buildings on via Ripetta, housing the Accademia di Belle Arti; in 1869 he began the church of S. Tommaso di Canterbury in via Monserrato, completed by A. Poletti and V. BISIGNANO. C. was a mediocre architectural personality, wavering between an academic purism and a freer classicizing inspiration.
