CANALE, BARTOLOMEO, venerable. - Milanese Barnabite, b. in 1605, d. in 1681. Educated by the Jesuits of Brera, he entered the Barnabites at the age of 22 and distinguished himself by piety and austerity of life. For about 28 years he resided in Monza. The principal field of his activity was the care of souls. He also held positions of trust in the Order. He was highly esteemed for his sanctity and for the extraordinary gifts with which he was favored. On 26 July 1948 the decree on the heroic nature of his virtues was published. He is buried in the church of the Carrobiolo in Monza.
He published two important ascetical works, the fruit of his meditations and experiences: Diario spirituale, ovvero meditazioni per tutti i giorni dell'anno, diviso in tre parti, utile a Religiosi claustrali e a chiunque desidera vivere secondo lo spirito ecc. (Milan 1670; 11th ed., Monza 1909); La verità scoperta al christiano intorno alle cose presenti, (Milan 1694, 4th ed. of 1895).
