BARTOLOMEO CANALE, Venerable. — Milanese Barnabite, b. 1605, d. 1681. Educated by the Jesuits of Brera, he entered the Barnabites at the age of 22 and distinguished himself for his piety and austerity of life. For about 28 years he resided in Monza. The principal field of his activity was the care of souls. He also held positions of trust within the Order. He was highly esteemed for his holiness and for the extraordinary gifts with which he was favored. On 26 July 1948, the decree on the heroic virtues was published. He is buried in the church of the Carrobbio in Monza.
He published two important ascetical works, the fruit of his meditations and experiences: *Diario spirituale, ovvero meditazioni per tutti i giorni dell'anno*, divided into three parts, useful for cloistered religious and for anyone desiring to live according to the spirit, etc. (Milan 1670; 11th ed., Monza 1909); *La verità scoperta al christiano intorno alle cose presenti* (Milan 1694, 4th ed. 1895).
