CAPOCCI. - Family of musicians. GAETANO, b. in Rome on 16 Oct. 1811, d. there on 11 Jan. 1898, organist at S. Maria in Vallicella, then at S. Maria Maggiore, and, from Feb. 1855, maestro di cappella at S. Giovanni in Laterano. He studied with Fioravanti and Sante Pascoli; he was the author of various Oratorios, among them Il Battista (1833) and Assalonne (1842), of numerous masses, litanies, psalms, motets, etc. He had many pupils, such as Renzi, Moriconi, Cotogni, etc.

Far less popular than he, but of higher worth as an organist and as a composer, was his son FILIPPO, b. in Rome on 11 May 1840, d. there on 25 July 1911. He was organist at S. Giovanni in Laterano from 1875 and at S. Ignazio, a teacher of organ at the Accademia di S. Cecilia; he composed the Oratorio S. Atanasio (1863), various sacred music and valuable pieces for organ.
