CAPOCCI. – Family of musicians. GAETANO, born in Rome on 16 October 1811, died there on 11 January 1898; organist at S. Maria in Vallicella, then at S. Maria Maggiore, and, from February 1855, chapel master at S. Giovanni in Laterano. He studied with Fioravanti and Sante Pascoli; he was the author of various oratorios, including Il Battista (1833) and Assalonne (1842), as well as numerous masses, litanies, psalms, motets, etc. He had many pupils, including Renzi, Moriconi, Cotogni, and others.
Far less popular than he, but of greater stature as an organist and composer, was his son FILIPPO, born in Rome on 11 May 1840, died there on 25 July 1911. He was organist at S. Giovanni in Laterano from
1875 and at S. Ignazio, and teacher of organ at the Accademia di S. Cecilia; he composed the oratorio S. Atanasio (1863), various sacred compositions, and notable pieces for organ.
