CAPOCCHI. - A family of musicians. Gaetano, b.
in Rome on 16 Oct. 1811, d. there on 11 Jan. 1898,
organist at S. Maria in Vallicella, then at S. Maria
Maggiore, and from Feb. 1855, maestro di cappella at
S. Giovanni in Laterano. He studied with Fioravanti and
Sante Pascoli; he composed various oratorios, including
Il Battista (1833) and Assalonne (1842), numerous masses,
litany settings, psalms, motets, etc. He had many pupils,
including Renzi, Moriconi, Cotogni, etc.
Far less popular than he, but of higher value as an
organist and composer was his son Filippo, b. in Rome
on 11 May 1840, d. there on 25 July 1911. He was
organist at S. Giovanni in Laterano from 1875 and at S.
Ignazio, and taught organ at the Accademia di S. Cecilia;
he composed the oratorio S. Atanasio (1863), various sacred
music works, and notable pieces for organ.
