CARLOMANNO. – Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, son of Carlo Martello, born ca. 715. At the death of his father, who had been mayor of the palace for the entire kingdom of the Franks, he succeeded him in Austrasia (741–47), while his brother Pipino received Neustria. He ensured the unity of the kingdom, supported the foundation of several monasteries, and backed the reform of the Frankish Church that s. Bonifacio was carrying out. In 743 he withdrew to a monastery on Mount Soratte, from which in 750 he went to Montecassino. He left it at the abbot’s request to reconcile the Longobardi with Pipino. His mission having failed, he was detained in a monastery at Vienne, where he d. on 17 Aug. 754.
