CARLOMANNUS. — Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, son of Charles Martel, born c. 715. At the death of his father, who had been Mayor of the Palace for the entire Frankish kingdom, he succeeded him in Austrasia (741–47), while his brother Pippin received Neustria. He ensured the unity of the kingdom, promoted the foundation of several monasteries, and supported the reform of the Frankish Church being carried out by St. Boniface. In 743, he retired to a monastery on Monte Soratte, from where in 750 he moved to Monte Cassino. He left it at the request of the abbot to reconcile the Lombards with Pippin. After his mission failed, he was detained in a monastery in Vienne, where he died on 17 August 754.
