CARLOMAN. - Mayor of the palace of Austrasia, son of Charles Martel, b. ca. 715. On the death of his father, who had been mayor of the palace for the entire Frankish kingdom, he succeeded him in Austrasia (741-47), while his brother Pepin received Neustria. He secured the unity of the kingdom, favored the founding of several monasteries, and supported the reform of the Frankish Church that St. Boniface was carrying out. In 743 he retired to a monastery on Mount Soratte, whence in 750 he moved to Montecassino. He left it, at the entreaty of the abbot, to reconcile the Lombards with Pepin. Having failed in his mission, he was detained in a monastery at Vienne, where he died on 17 Aug. 754.
