CELESTINE IV, POPE. - Goffredo

Castiglioni, Milanese, son of Giovanni and of Cassandra Crivelli, sister of Urban III (d. 1187). A disciple of St. Galdinus, he was a canon and chancellor of Milan, a monk in the Cistercian monastery of Altacomba, where he wrote the history of the kingdom of Scotland. In 1227 Gregory IX created him cardinal of St. Mark, and he then became bishop of Sabina. On the death of Gregory IX (Aug. 21, 1241) the ten cardinals present in Rome, under the impression of the political difficulties of the moment, were unable to agree on the choice of a successor; to force them to decide, the people of Rome shut them up in the Septizodium. Castiglioni emerged as pope, by then old and infirm (Oct. 25, 1241), so much so that he died barely 17 days later (Nov. 10, 1241). He was buried in the Vatican basilica.
