GALDINO, Saint. – Archbishop of Milan (18 Apr. 1166–10 Apr. 1176). Of the Milanese family of the Valvarsi della Sala, he was chancellor and archdeacon of Milan under the archbishops Ribaldo (1134) and Oberto (1146). In 1161 he had to leave the city, which was besieged by Barbarossa. Created cardinal of S. Sabina in 1165, he succeeded Oberto in the Milanese see the following year (18 Apr. 1166) and became legate of Alexander III for Lombardy.
He promoted the rebuilding of Milan and the foundation of Alessandria. In Bergamo and elsewhere he worked for the removal of schismatic bishops. He distinguished himself as a reformer of morals, in his charity toward the poor, and in his fervent preaching against the Cathars. Indeed, he died in the pulpit of the church of S. Tecla. He is buried in the Duomo; Alexander III canonized him, and his feast is celebrated on 18 April.
