GALDINO, Saint. - Archbishop of Milan (18 Apr. 1166-10 Apr. 1176). Of the Milanese family of the Valvarsi della Sala, he was chancellor and archdeacon of Milan under the archbishops Ribaldo (1134) and Oberto (1146). In 1161 he had to leave the city besieged by Barbarossa. Created cardinal of St. Sabina in 1165, he succeeded Oberto the following year in the Milanese see (18 Apr. 1166) and became legate of Alexander III for Lombardy.

He favored the rebuilding of Milan and the founding of Alessandria. At Bergamo and elsewhere he promised the removal of the schismatic bishops. He distinguished himself as a reformer of morals, in charity toward the poor and in ardent preaching against the Cathars. Indeed death overtook him in the pulpit of the church of St. Tecla. He is buried in the Cathedral; Alexander III canonized him; his feast is celebrated on 18 Apr.
