GALEN, CLEMENS AUGUST von - Portrait.
GALEN, CLEMENS AUGUST von. - Cardinal, b. 16 March 1878 in Dinklage Castle (Oldenburg), d. 22 March 1946 in Münster. Ordained priest in 1904. He was a parish priest, first in Berlin until 1929, and then of the parish of St. Lambert in Münster, until his appointment as bishop, which took place on 5 Sept. 1933, at the most critical moment in relations between Church and State in Germany.
The rise of National Socialism to power and the spread of racist and pagan ideas soon gave the new bishop the opportunity to prove himself a valiant defender of the rights of Catholics and of the Church. Well known are his sermons of the summer of 1941, in which he protested energetically against the seizure of monasteries and convents, sermons that constitute a violent indictment of the illegal conduct of the Gestapo and the state authorities, as well as of the entire system of government then in force. They had a very wide echo and made the figure of the bishop of Münster popular at home and abroad. In recognition of his energetic defense of the rights of Catholics during the Hitler regime, Pius XII created him cardinal of the title of St. Bernard at the Baths in the Consistory of 18 Febr. 1946. An untimely death overtook him immediately after his return to his diocese.
