CARMEIA. — The information available about the city and the diocese is scarce and uncertain. C. was a city in Apulia near Mount Gargano. Among the 24 episcopal sees of the “regio II,” Apulia, an episcopate “Carmeianum” is recorded before the Lombard invasion; a Probus, episcopus Carmeniensis or Carmenianensis, is known to have attended the Roman synods of 501 and 502.
