CARRARA, CAMILLO. — Born at Albino on 14 March 1871, died at Cheren on 15 June 1924. He entered religious life among the Capuchin Friars Minor of Lombardy on 7 September 1887, and served as their provincial minister (1905–11). The first apostolic vicar of the mission in the Eritrean colony (26 February 1911), entrusted to the Lombard Capuchins, he increased the clergy and the indigenous parishes, established missionary centers among pagan tribes, erected school buildings for indigenous people and Italians, and founded schools of arts and crafts. Through the printing press at Asmara he disseminated sacred learning and Italian culture. He had a splendid cathedral built at Asmara, where he was buried (1926).
