CARRARA, CAMILLO. — Born in Albino on March 14, 1871; died at Cheren on June 15, 1924. He entered the Capuchin Franciscans of Lombardy on September 7, 1887, and served as their provincial minister (1905–11). He was the first Apostolic Vicar of the mission in the colony of Eritrea (February 26, 1911), entrusted to the Lombard Capuchins. He expanded the indigenous clergy and parishes, established missionary centers among pagan tribes, erected school buildings for both natives and Italians, and founded vocational schools. With the printing press of Asmara, he disseminated sacred science and Italian culture. He had a magnificent cathedral built in Asmara, where he was buried (1926).
