LODOVICO CARLO CASARTELLI. — Bishop and Orientalist, b. in London on 14 Nov. 1852, d. in Manchester on 18 Jan. 1925. He studied at the University of Louvain and was ordained priest in 1876. Professor and rector at St. Bede's College, Manchester, he became in November 1903 Bishop of Salford.
A scholar of Eastern culture and religions, he taught Zend and Pehlevi at the University of Louvain and Iranian languages at that of Manchester. He collaborated on the Catholic Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics. Among his works, particular mention should be made of *La philosophie religieuse du mazdéisme sous les Sassanides* (Louvain 1881) and the translation of the Pehlevi of the *Traité de médecine mazdéenne* (ibid. 1886).
