CHAMPION, PIERRE. - French Jesuit, b. at Avranches on 19 Oct. 1631, d. at Nantes on 28 June 1701. He is known for his biographical works on persons prominent for their mystical doctrines.
He published: 1) La vie du p. Rigoleuc S. I. avec ses lettres spirituelles (4 editions from 1686 to 1739); 2) Vie et doctrine spirituelle du p. Louis Lallemand d. C. d. J. (Paris 1694, Avignon 1826); 3) Lettres spirituelles et dialogues du p. Jean Surin d. C. d. J. (3 vols., Nantes 1695-1700, many editions); 4) Vie du vén. dom Jean de Palafox: only seven sheets appeared in 1688, publication having been interrupted because of the author’s frankness; the entire manuscript, found at the college of Clermont, was used by Abbé Dinouart in his anonymous life of Palafox published in 1767; 5) Vie des fondateurs des maisons de retraite (Mr. de Kervilio, p. Vincent Huby, etc.; Nantes 1698).
