Chobar (Heb. Kēbhār)

CHOBAR (ebr. Kēbhār). – River of the “land of the Chaldeans,” on whose bank stood the locality called Tēl-ʿĀbhibh (“hill of the ears of grain”), where the first deportation of Jews was installed (597 B.C.), among whom was also Ezechiele (Ez. 1:1–3; 3:15, etc.). It is confidently identified with the Naru kabaru (“great canal”), a navigable canal that crossed Nippur (modern Niffer) southeast of the city of Babylon.
