CERESETO, GIOVANNI GIACINTO. — Biblical scholar, born in Genoa in 1840, died there on 28 December 1920. From 1875 to 1892 he taught Sacred Scripture and other subjects at the seminary of Chiavari. In 1892 he entered the Oratory of Genoa. In 1903 he was among the first appointed consultors of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (v.).
Of very extensive erudition, he wrote much, though in a form that was more polemical and prolix than scholarly; in orientation he was conservative, but with a somewhat rigorist tendency. His principal works are: Istituzioni bibliche (6 vols., Chiavari 1890–1900); Stoppani e la cosmologia mosaica (there 1893); Leone XIII e gli studi biblici (Genoa 1902); Ipotesi del p. Hummelauer sul Deuteronomio (there 1904); Autenticità del Vangelo di s. Matteo (Rome 1911); Autenticità delle epistole pastorali di s.
