CERETHI (Hebrew Kērethī). - Mercenary troops, often listed in the Bible together with the Pelethites. Since the country of origin of the Philistines (v.), their kinsmen, was Caphtor, commonly identified with Crete (v.), the C. appear to have been the "Cretans," as the Septuagint understood, translating C. in the prophetic books (Ezek. 25:16; Zeph. 2:5) with Κρήτες. The name Pēlēthī (Pelethites), rather than a transformation of the Pēlēthī (Philistines), appears to be the title of a particular family group from Crete. Having settled in the midst of Palestine, called precisely in 1 Sam. 30:14 the "Negeb of the C.," because of the poor fertility of the territory and their warlike nature they devoted themselves to military service, in the pay of King David. Loyal to him even in the gravest political crises, they constituted the personal guard also of his successors.
