CANINI, ANGELO

CANINI, Angelo. — Distinguished Semitist, born at Anghiari, near Arezzo, in 1521, died in Paris in 1557. He taught, at least as an assistant, various Semitic languages at the universities of Venice, Padua, and Bologna. He traveled to Spain, from where he was summoned to Paris by Francis I to occupy a chair. There he enjoyed the familiarity of distinguished figures, including G. Duprat, bishop of Clermont. At only 36 years of age, he left the following esteemed works: *Institutiones linguarum Syriacae, Assyriacae et Thalmudicae, una cum Aethiopicae et Arabicae collatione, quibus addita est ad calcem Novi Testamenti multorum locorum historica enarratione* (Paris 1554); *Disquisitiones in loca aliquot Novi Testamenti obscuriora*, in *Critici Sacri*, VIII (London 1660), p. 211; *De locis S. Scripturae hebraicis commentaria* (Antwerp 1600).
