CIRIACO, Patriarch of Constantinople. - He was elected to this see in 595 under the emperor Maurice. Continuing the tradition of his predecessor John IV 'the Faster', in the letter in which he gave notice of his elevation to Pope Gregory I and transmitted his profession of faith, C. appropriated the title of 'ecumenical'. Like his predecessor Pelagius II, the Pope protested against this claim, and there was an exchange of letters on the matter which remained without result. C. energetically opposed the attempt of the emperor Phocas, who wanted to seize Constantina, the widow of Maurice, and her daughters who had taken refuge in a sacred place. In 607 Pope Boniface III obtained from the same Phocas an edict by which the patriarch of Constantinople was forbidden to use the ecumenical title; but this prohibition was not observed after the death of Phocas. Meanwhile C. had also died, on 29 Oct. 606, and was buried in the church of the Apostles; he left a memory of a man of zeal and piety.
