CITTANOVA D'ISTRIA

CITTANOVA d'ISTRIA. - A locality on the Istrian coast which arose on the site of an ancient Emonia; hence, from the Middle Ages onward, the bishopric also took this name, and it was erroneously supposed to have succeeded the well-known bishopric of Emona in Upper Pannonia. The bishopric is mentioned during the schism of the Three Chapters; it continued through the Lombard-Frankish period, from which there remain the vestiges of a baptistery with the inscription of Bishop Maurizio; it passed through the following ages in its very modest existence, until it was suppressed by a bull of Leone XII dated 30 June 1828, made effective in 1830. The last bishop died in 1831. The territory was united to Trieste. The bishopric depended on the patriarchate of Aquileia until 1751, and thereafter shared the fate of the other bishoprics of Istria.
