CONGREGAZIONE DI SANTA CATERINA DA SIENA DELLE SUORE DEL TERZ'ORDINE DI SAN DOMENICO NEL SUD-AFRICA. - Under this designation is to be understood the union of 6 already existing Congregations of Dominican tertiaries, 5 of them in the South African Union, with their respective motherhouses at Capetown, King William's Town, Newcastle, Oakford, and Port Elizabeth; the sixth with its motherhouse at Salisbury (Southern Rhodesia).
This union, promoted by Propaganda Fide, was approved by Pio XI (16 Nov. 1922), who wished it to be dependent upon the same dicastery, although the C. was not properly to be considered of pontifical right. The first constitutions, examined by Propaganda, were introduced by the apostolic delegate, then re-examined and approved ad septenium by decree of 20 Nov. 1926. Subsequently, the various original groups resumed their autonomy, and at present all depend upon the S. Congregation of Religious, with the sole exception of the C. of Salisbury, which depends upon Propaganda.
